Poolside do's & don'ts Safety First

Swim Safe, Splash Smart

Your Guide to Enjoying the Pool—Safely and Responsibly

Pool season is here, and that means it’s time for fun, relaxation, and backyard memories. However, before everyone dives in, it’s essential to review a few key poolside rules. Whether you’re a pool owner or a guest, knowing the do’s and don’ts can help prevent accidents, protect your equipment, and ensure a safe, enjoyable experience for all.

At Watercrafters, we believe a well-maintained pool is only part of the equation—a safe environment makes all the difference.

❌ Poolside Don’ts

  1. Don’t run near the pool.

Slippery surfaces + speed = accidents. Walk calmly and encourage kids to do the same.

  1. Don’t allow diving in shallow areas.

It can lead to serious injuries. Ensure all guests are aware of the safe diving areas—or better yet, avoid them altogether.

  1. Don’t swim during storms.

If you hear thunder or see lightning, clear the pool immediately. Lightning can travel through water. If thunder roars, everyone should head indoors for at least 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder.

  1. Don’t overload your pool with people, toys, or floats.

Excessive weight or blockage can damage equipment and reduce circulation. These can create tripping hazards and obstruct views of the water. When not in use, store everything away neatly.

  1. Don’t string lights or electrical cords over the pool.

While it might look festive, overhead string lights are a serious safety hazard. Electricity and water don’t mix. Instead, use ground-level or landscape lighting rated for pool areas.

  1. Don’t leave children unattended—ever.

Even confident swimmers can quickly get into trouble. Adult supervision is non-negotiable.

  1. Don’t ignore faulty equipment.

If something doesn’t seem right, it’s probably worth a check-up. Your safety and your pool’s health are vital to make sure that all equipment is efficient and working properly.

✅ Poolside Do’s

  1. Do shower before swimming.

It helps reduce the oils, lotions, and sweat that can strain your pool’s filter and affect water chemistry.

  1. Do supervise all swimmers—especially children at all times.

Even strong swimmers need adult supervision. A child should never be left alone near the water, even for a moment. Drowning is silent and can happen in seconds. Designate a “Water Watcher” during gatherings to monitor the pool.

  1. Do secure your pool area and use safety equipment.

Install fencing, latches, and pool alarms to protect children and pets from accidental access to the pool. Make sure life rings and drain covers are in good working order. Safety should always come first.

  1. Do use proper lighting—safely.

Pool lighting should always be installed by a licensed professional and rated for wet environments. Stick to UL-listed, waterproof fixtures, and keep them away from overhead spans.

  1. Do keep your pool area tidy.

Remove floats and toys when not in use and keep walkways free of towels or gear to avoid tripping hazards.

  1. Do check your pool chemistry regularly.

Balanced water prevents irritation and protects your pool surfaces and equipment. Not sure how to keep it balanced? Ask about our weekly maintenance plans!

  1. Do establish and enforce pool rules.

Running, diving in shallow water, or pushing others can all lead to injuries. Make your pool a safe zone with clear expectations.
